The Emporia High track and field teams picked up 7 top 3 finishes at the Lawrence Free State Barriers Breakers meet Friday.

A 5 run 7th inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 7-1 win over the Kansas City Royals Thursday night.

Ian Kinsler hit a lead off home run in the first for the Angels. In the 7th Shohei Ohtani tripled driving 3 runs. Mike Trout added a solo home run in the 8th. 
Mike Moustakas scored on a Lucas Duda single in the 8th inning for the Royals lone run. The Royals and Angels play again Friday night with first pitch at 7:15pm. Coverage on KVOE 1400AM/96.9FM begins at 6:30pm.

The Emporia High softball, girls soccer and track and field teams are scheduled to compete Friday.

The Emporia High softball team plays at Topeka Seaman. The Lady Spartans are 4-0 to start the season Junior Kristeena Thompson says they have to take the right mentality into the games.

The Emporia High girls soccer team hosts Junction City. The Varsity match is set to kick-off at 6:30p at Emporia High School

The Emporia High track and field teams will be competing in the Lawrence Free State Invitational. Both the girls and boys are coming off of 1st place finishes at Lansing. Senior Colin Polston says that is a confidence boost.

Colin will be running in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, the 4 by 100 relay and in the long jump.
Junior Elizabeth Schwerdtfeger will be competing in the long jump, triple jump, 100 hurdles and 4 by 100 relay.



The Emporia State track and field teams will be competing in the Wichita State hosted K.T. Woodman meet. 

The Emporia State mens and womens tennis duels against Newman have been postponed and rescheduled for Monday.

The Emporia High baseball team was swept by Topeka Seaman in a doubleheader Thursday night.

Seaman won the first game 9-1. The Spartans scored the games 1st run in the 2nd inning. John Miller scored on an Eric Hertlein sacrifice fly. The big inning for Seaman was a 5 run 5th inning. Seaman won the 2nd game 7-4. Again Emporia High scored first. They scored 2 runs in the first inning. Hayden Baumwart scored on an error and Beau Baumgardner scored on a Jace Stewart single. Seaman would score 4 runs in the 3rd inning and 3 runs in the 4th inning. The Spartans scored a single run in the 3rd inning, Sawyer Slayden scoring on a Skyler Douglas single. The Spartans added a single run in the 4th inning, Skyler Beatty scoring on a Beau Baumgardner double. Despite losing both games Emporia High Coach Anthony Markowitz said they took steps forward, especially in the 2nd game.

The Spartans fall to 1-5 for the season. They are scheduled to play at Washburn Rural Tuesday

The Emporia State softball team swept a doubleheader from Southwest Baptist Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Hornets won the 1st game 5-4. Southwest Baptist scored a run in the first inning. Emporia State would tie the game in the 2nd inning. SBU scored 3 runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 4-1 lead. Emporia State answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The game remained tied until Annie Rockley doubled in the winning run in the 7th inning with 2 out.  
Emporia State won the 2nd game 3-2. Both teams scored 2 runs in the 4th inning.  Kenzie Garvin scored the winning run on a single by RAchel Kauss with 2 outs in the 6th inning. Coach April Rosales said they took a different mental approach into the games.

Montana Mesler was the winning pitcher of the 2nd game giving up 2 runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts. She worked out of bases loaded jam in the 5th inning without giving up a run.  

The Lady Hornets will host Central Missouri Friday afternoon, first pitch has been moved to 2pm.

Two Emporia High students will continue their track careers at Emporia State University in the fall.

EHS seniors Kaitlyn Karjala and Brent Hastert will be the newest additions to the ESU track team after signing their letters of intent to attend ESU Thursday afternoon.

During high school, Karjala has competed in both cross country and track and was a member of the 2017 all-area girls cross country team. She says she is excited to continue her career on her home turf.


Hastert was a three-sport athlete for EHS competing in football, basketball and track where he has been a multi-time state qualifier. He says running at the college level is a dream come true.


Karjala and Hastert are the 81st and 82nd signees for the EHS track program.
