DESCRIPTION OF JOB

 

Under the supervision of the Dispatch Supervisor, the Public Safety Dispatcher is a non-exempt position under FLSA.  The employee in this position performs specialized work in receiving and dispatching messages for police, fire and ambulance personnel.  The employee in this position is responsible for operation of dispatch radios, computers and telephone switches which receive and dispatch messages, a portion of which may be of an emergency nature.  The Public Safety Dispatcher must act quickly, efficiently, calmly and accurately in receiving, dispatching and processing calls and in sending proper equipment and personnel.

 

STANDARDS FOR INITIAL CONSIDERATION

 

$          Ability to acquire a working knowledge of the geography and organizational structure of the City of Emporia, Lyon County and surrounding counties served by the Dispatch Center including streets and their hundred blocks, relative distance between streets, City boundary limits, sectors, and fire response districts;

$          Requires ability to multi-task and to make good decisions under pressure;

$          Minimum of 18 years of age;

$          Possess general knowledge of computer data entry, mathematics, and communications equipment;

$          Resident of Lyon County or relocate upon employment;

$          Possess high school diploma or G.E.D

$          Must be able to pass aptitude, reading comprehension, data entry test; oral interview; polygraph exam, background investigation, physical exam, and drug screen;

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

$         Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to at least two years of work experience in communications involving one or more of the following areas: dispatching fire/emergency medical services or dispatching police services at a Primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), also known as a 911 Center.  Prior experience working with Spillman software is preferred.
