ESU's dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences retires

Emporia State University will have a new dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences next fall.

Current dean Dr. Marie Miller has announced plans to retire, saying she wants to be involved in more service projects.

Miller earned a bachelor's degree in music from Silver Lake College in Wisconsin , plus a master's in music from Northwestern and a doctorate from Florida State University . Miller taught music in K-through-12 schools in Wisconsin before moving to higher education, with stops at Silver Lake and Southeast Missouri State before coming to Emporia State in 1990.

Miller became the dean on Christmas Day, 2011. She has also served as associate chair and chair of the music department and oversaw the merging of the modern languages and English-journalism departments. Miller has several high honors to her credit, including the Roe Cross Distinguished Professor in 2001 and the Ruth Schillinger Faculty Award earlier this year.
