As the Emporia Animal Shelter remains full of both dogs and cats, pet adoption fees are changing for dogs at the facility.
Fees for adopting adult dogs that have been at the shelter for less than two weeks are going up from $20 to $75, while dogs available for adoption longer than two weeks will have their fees go up from $20 to $25.
Adoption fees for puppies and purebred dogs are going from $75 to $100. Adoption fees for cats and kittens, meanwhile, are staying at $20.
Judy Dieker, the director of the Humane Society of the Flint Hills, tells KVOE News there is an ongoing revolving door when it comes to pet occupancy at the shelter.
The fee increases are designed to offset corresponding increases for medication and vaccination costs. Dieker says the current fee structure has been in place for at least a decade.
Folks interested in adopting pets through the Animal Shelter need to fill out a request form and pay a deposit, which is returned after the pets are spayed or neutered. There is an overnight wait for approval. The deposit fee is $130 for dogs and $55 for cats, both of which are unchanged with the new fee structure.
The shelter is located at 1216 Hatcher. Shelter hours are 11 am to 3 pm Saturday through Wednesday.
