The Emporia Public Library will soon get some much-needed repairs to its aging ceiling.
At the library's board meeting last Thursday, members passed a motion to accept an estimate of $21,000 for a replacement of ceiling tiles with the City of Emporia kicking in an additional $15,000. Library Director Robin Newell says the ceiling replacement is necessary since it hasn't been done since the library building opened in 1979.
Newell says it's their goal to keep the library open during the ceiling renovation but adds that some areas of the library will be unavailable at times.
During last week's meeting, the library board also accepted a proposed budget draft for 2019, totalling just over $1 million. Newell says the board will also be soon asking for a 10 percent boost in the amount of funding it receives from the Lyon County Commission.
If approved by the county commission, materials and library staffing needs would be included. It would then come back to the library board for further consideration.
