Great Bend teen hospitalized, Emporians unhurt in Topeka crash

A Great Bend teenager was hospitalized for possible injuries following an accident involving two Emporians on Saturday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says 14-year-old Melina Chavez was hospitalized at St. Francis in Topeka after the two-vehicle wreck on U.S. Highway 24 just east of Kansas Avenue in Topeka shortly before 12:30 pm. Her condition has not been released.

The Highway Patrol says Chavez was a passenger in a car driven by 19-year-old Chon Chavez, also of Great Bend. Melina Chavez was hurt when Chon Chavez failed to stop at an intersection and rear-ended a car driven by 20-year-old Dalton Rhoads of Emporia.

Rhoads and a passenger, 19-year-old Haley Robertson of Emporia, were not hurt. A second passenger in the Chavez vehicle, Anthony Valenzuela of Great Bend, was also unhurt.
