Planned burns discouraged this week

A combination of dry vegetation, low humidity levels and fairly windy conditions is setting the stage for very high fire danger across Lyon and surrounding counties for most of this week.

Chase and Greenwood counties are in a red flag warning for extreme fire danger from 3 to 9 pm Tuesday.

Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Steve Kuhlmann says there have been a lot of rekindle fires over the past two weeks.

Kuhlmann says people have to watch the extended forecast before they burn. They also need enough water on hand or nearby just in case.

Red flag warnings don't impact Lyon County currently, largely because the National Weather Service offices in Topeka and Wichita use different criteria for their warnings. Both Weather Service offices use temperatures, wind speeds and relative humidity levels to create a matrix for issuing red flag warnings. The Topeka office puts more weighting on humidity levels, while the Wichita office puts more weighting on wind speeds.
