Turnpike crash hurts Topeka man

Emporia firefighters took one man to Newman Regional Health for observation and possible treatment after an injury accident on the Kansas Turnpike near the Lyon-Chase county line Saturday morning.

The Turnpike Authority says 22-year-old Dustin Athon of Topeka was southbound when he crashed about 15 miles southwest of Emporia shortly before 6 am. Athon apparently swerved to miss a deer that had started crossing the highway, but he hit the center barrier wall in the process.

Newman Regional Health does not release patient conditions to the media. Athon was the only person in the car and was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
