Undead, survivors come out of woodwork for first Zombie 5-K at ESU

Close to 25 Emporia State students kicked off Dead Week in style with the first Zombie Fun Run 5K on Saturday.

For a time, it looked like zombies would outnumber survivors pretty handily, but the numbers leveled out shortly before the run began. Zombie Cory Johnston of Burlingame said it was a no-brainer for him to get involved.

Survivors like Joshua Warren of Valley Center said the run was a good way to end the semester.

Zombies were scattered across campus, while survivors had to run the 5-K and also try to avoid getting their flags captured by the undead. Those failing in that regard...well, they became zombies for the rest of the event.

Proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
