Lots of things are happening in Emporia for Mother's Day weekend, especially on Saturday.
The Flatland Cruisers are having their annual car show in downtown Emporia. Cars will be parked from 9 am to 4 pm, if not sooner, and club member Larry Dieker says folks can expect hundreds of cars from across Kansas at the show.
There will be a DJ from 9 am to 3 pm and live music starting at 3.
The Emporia Police Department's Scramble for Special Olympics begins at 9 am at the Municipal Golf Course. Police Officer Dominic Vortherms says the effort is important to the department and to him personally.
Cost is $45 a person for Municipal Golf Course annual members and $65 for non-members. Proceeds help offset costs associated with the Special Olympics state games in Wichita next month.
Hetlinger Developmental Services is having its spring aluminum can recycling special from 9 am to noon. Hetlinger is paying 50 cents a pound and recyclers bringing in at least 50 pounds get a free T-shirt.
U.S. Senate candidate and current Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor will be at the Lyon County Courthouse Annex as the featured speaker for the Lyon County Democrats monthly meeting Saturday. The meeting is at 10 am.
Local letter carriers are making special pickups all day Saturday for the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive benefiting the Salvation Army food pantry. Postal worker Janet Way was a guest on the Talk of Emporia this week and said local postal patrons will receive a blue grocery bag along with a post card in their mail this week. If you wish to contribute, put non-perishable food items in the bag and leave it on your porch or by the front door and a volunteer will pick it up Saturday. Way said rural route customers and apartment dwellers can also participate.
This is also the last weekend for Free Landfill Days at the Lyon-Chase County Transfer Station. Residential customers need their April electrical receipt to participate. Tires will accepted but at the normal rate. Transfer Station hours are 8 am to 5 pm Saturday and 1 to 5 pm Sunday.
Camp Alexander has its annual open house and its Family Fitness Day on Saturday. AmeriCorps member Ashley Ingram says there will be a lot of activities.
