Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service to be held Wednesday

Lyon County's annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service begins at 8:30 am outside White Auditorium on Wednesday.

On KVOE's Morning Show on Monday, Emporia Police Sgt. Lisa Sage said it will be a brief but powerful ceremony.

Here in Lyon County, Deputy James Spillman was stabbed to death in 1881. Sheriff Walter Davis was shot to death in 1916. Even though a local law enforcement official hasn't been fatally wounded by an attacker since Davis' death, local leaders have said for several years their officers have to be more vigilant now because of societal changes. Sage says officer safety is a top priority whenever they have to respond to a call, regardless of the nature.

We'll air the ceremony live on 14 KVOE. We'll also have the live audio and video stream through KVOE-TV on KVOE.com.
