Attendance is up sharply at the Jones Aquatic Center.
Supervisor Melinda Erwin says year-to-date numbers are closing in on 4,400 users, up over 40 percent from the nearly 3,100 who attended through June 16 last year.
Group lessons are up 17 percent and private lessons are up 33 percent so far. Erwin says the numbers are strong despite two late starts and a weather-related shutdown day already this season. She says an emphasis on programming has helped.
The Aquatic Center has put several specialty events on its calendar throughout the years, including its Camp Night on Friday where people can bring grills, tents and food for a late-night swim.
Numbers earlier in the season were even more impressive. During the meeting, Recreation Commission Director Tom McEvoy said attendance from the opening date May 25 through June 8 was over 3,400. Attendance during that time last year was around 780.
