Train accident victim identified as Emporia resident

Emporia Police say the victim in Wednesday night's fatal train accident fell off his bike and was unconscious when the train struck him.

Lt. Jim Tilton says police, fire and EMS were dispatched to the Market Street crossing around 9:40 pm for an accident involving a train and a bicyclist. The cyclist has been identified as 46-year-old Michael Glaser of south central Emporia.

Tilton says Glaser was southbound on his bike on Market Street when he fell off his bike for unlisted reasons. Glaser fell onto the south railroad tracks and was unconscious when an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train hit him. The train tried to stop but was unable to do so in time to avoid the accident.

Glaser was trapped underneath the train before he was extricated by rescue workers. Glaser was taken to Newman Regional Health where he was pronounced dead.

Traffic was shunted away from the accident scene for several hours after the accident.
