Combine driver escapes unhurt after fire develops

A combine fire stopped one worker's bean harvest Saturday, but thankfully didn't lead to a larger fire or any injuries.

Emporia Fire Capt. Bill Harmon says combine driver John Hertlein used an on-board fire extinguisher to put out most of the blaze near Roads 210 and "K" before firefighters arrived. Harmon says Hertlein "did everything right."

Early indications are some sort of hydraulic issue caused the fire. The blaze was stopped before it got into a nearby bean field.

David and Becky Kusmaul own the property.
