Broken water line at Flint Hills Care Center leads to fire alarm

A burst sprinkler line caused concerns about a possible fire at an Emporia senior care facility Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters from Emporia and Americus responded to Flint Hills Care Center, 1620 Wheeler, as did Kansas Gas and Westar Energy after smoke and flames were reported shortly before 1 pm and with extreme cold conditions still in place. Emporia Fire Battalion Chief Rich Gould says the situation turned out to be far less dire -- a sprinkler line froze before bursting, sending water from the ceiling onto rooms at the end of a south hall already closed for construction and unoccupied. There was no fire of any sort with this incident.

No injuries were reported. Firefighters helped with the initial cleanup effort.
