Brownback resignation, Colyer inauguration coming Wednesday

TOPEKA -- A changing of the guard is taking place in Topeka on Wednesday.

Current Gov. Sam Brownback will formally resign at 3 pm. Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer will then be sworn in as governor.

Colyer is the state's longest-serving lieutenant governor and is only the fourth to become governor after a resignation. Last week, Brownback was appointed ambassador at-large for international religious freedom after months of speculation and a second nomination from President Donald Trump.

Colyer has announced he plans to run for the office in November. He's among more than 20 combined candidates in the running for the governor's chair.
