Busy period ahead for Rescue Mission, Abundant Harvest

The Emporia Rescue Mission and Abundant Harvest Food Kitchen are preparing for both the Christmas holiday and colder weather -- both coming right at the same time.

High temperatures will drop from the 50s and 60s to the mid-30s by Friday, meaning more men may well be coming to the shelter and more demand on certain items like food and clothing. Director Lee Alderman was among our guests on KVOE's Talk of Emporia this week:

Abundant Harvest has seen high demand for some time. Volunteer Earl Clark says one measure of that is how fast food items come in and go out.

The Mission at 1119 Merchant still has 3-5 beds available at this time. Alderman says the Mission has stayed busy with men both looking to get their lives back in order and seeking jobs. Emporia's job market is such that Rescue Mission residents typically get jobs quickly, but they also walk several miles to work and back every day.

Abundant Harvest, 1028 Whittier, provides meals on Mondays through Thursdays. It also offers free boxed food as well as vegetables, bread and meats on short notice as large-scale donations come in. There's also a clothing closet on site.
