Emporia City Commission approves tax abatement, ordinance for Simmons expansion project

The Emporia City Commission officially closed the books on the 2017 fiscal year at Wednesday's action meeting.

After adjourning Sine Die, the commission reorganized electing Danny Giefer as mayor and Jon Geitz as vice mayor. The city commission approved two items related to the $38 million Simmons expansion project in southeast Emporia. The first was an incentive compliance agreement, essentially a 10-year, 100 percent property tax abatement for the expansion. Mayor Giefer spoke about the project following the meeting.
