Three Emporia schools have been named as 2017 Challenge Award recipients.

The Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force has named 78 schools as recipients of the Challenge Awards, including Riverside, William Allen White and Emporia Middle School. The annual awards recognize Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement.

Riverside Elementary was recognized for its work with fourth-grade math and reading. Principal Jared Giffin believes a major component of their success is teaching their students lessons that apply to the classroom and their everyday lives.

William Allen White Elementary was honored for their success with third-grade math programs. Principal Tell Kirk says strong communication between staff is a key factor in student success.

Emporia Middle School received their recognition for their sixth-grade math education. Principal Steve Bazan calls the award an affirmation for teachers and students.
