Despite chilly, raw conditions, bikers from several states came to Emporia this weekend.

ABATE of Kansas District No. 12 held its 24th annual Spring Fling Bike Show on Saturday at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building.

Participants came from across Kansas and several other states. Among them was Cottonwood Falls native Brian Davis, who now lives in Wichita. He says he got into riding because of his late brother, Paul.

Davis brought his 2011 Triumph Rocket III Touring class for the show. Davis says he maintains his bike and comes to the Emporia show to memorialize his brother, who was a regular at Spring Fling before he passed away.

Another proud motorcycle owner, Bob Heartline of Belleville, Ill., talked about his motorcycle.

Heartline says after hearing about the show for the first time online, he decided to make the trip. Heartline jokingly told the story about why he originally got into riding motorcycles.

Close to 70 bikes were on display, some from as far away as Colorado and Illinois. People could also enjoy food, vendors and an auction. Folks could also go to an after-show party at the VFW Post 1980 afterward.

Event organizer Deb Fuller says the bike show provides most of ABATE's budget for the year through the auction and raffle proceeds. Fuller says ABATE has helped build wheelchair ramps, pay for service dogs and provide scholarships for younger members. ABATE has also helped different organizations like the David Traylor Zoo, Shiloh Home of Hope and SOS in addition to its ongoing work for motorcycle and bike safety.
