BAZAAR -- What started as a roping activity became a fatal accident in Chase County on Monday night.

Sheriff Richard Dorneker says Clifford Cole of rural Cottonwood Falls died after the accident in the 1100 block of Sharps Creek Road southeast of Bazaar. Cole, 58, was in the process of roping a steer when a nearby calf came in front of the horse Cole was riding and bumped it. The horse then fell down and rolled over Cole twice.

Dorneker says a witness who was helping Cole began CPR and called authorities. Cole was rushed to Newman Regional Health afterward but succumbed to his injuries.

Depending on the breed, horses can weigh anywhere from 800 to 2,200 pounds.

The investigation continues.
