An untold number of Lyon-Coffey Rural Electric customers had to spend most of Wednesday evening in the dark.

Emporia fire crews were called out to the area of Roads 150 and F around 6 pm for a report of a small grass fire. Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage tells KVOE News a farm tractor hit an electric line and pulled down a utility pole in the process. A second pole then came down and the small fire developed in a ditch afterward.

Lyon-Coffey came out to the scene and shut down the lines in question. It also had to temporarily shut down the west Emporia substation for about an hour to safely make repairs to the downed poles.

In all, the power was offline for almost four and a half hours. No injuries were reported. Lyon-Coffey has not said how many customers or exactly which part of its coverage area were impacted.
