On Friday, 34 people will break new ground in endurance cycling.

They are the select few participating in the inaugural DK XL, a 350-mile ride into the Flint Hills. Riders taking off Friday afternoon will have 35 hours to complete their trek without the support available to riders in the DK's shorter races.

One of the participants this year is Steve Cannon of Des Moines, Iowa. On a special Newsmaker 2 segment this week, Cannon called it a "huge honor" to be on the roster.

During the interview, Cannon was asked the simple question: why?

Cannon says the physical preparation is only part of the equation for riders hoping to conquer the DK 200 -- and, this year, the XL.

Cannon is no stranger to endurance activities. He earned his coveted 1000 Miles of Kanza goblet last year for finishing the DK 200 five times. He also has been inducted into the Order of the Hrimthurs for his success in winter ultra-endurance events. He is also known for being the first person to run around Lake Michigan. With those experiences, though, he says coming down the finish line chute at the end of his DK rides is truly something special. His first time down the chute had him hooked.

Dirty Kanza founder Jim Cummins says the 350-mile distance was considered for the signature race before organizers decided on the 200-mile option instead. The 34 participating in the XL represents the 34 people who rode in the first DK.

DK XL participants will launch from Seventh and Mechanic at 4 pm Friday. The other traditional DK races will launch from the 800 block of Commercial beginning at 6 am Saturday. A new race for high school participants will start from Soden's Grove at 10 am Saturday.
