New degree programs and budget approvals were the highlights of the Flint Hills Technical College Board of Trustees meeting Monday.

A major action item on the agenda was conversation and approval on the 2018-19 academic budget. Budget increases for 2019 were reported in several areas including in student testing fees, customized training, revenue and state technical education amongst others. The budget was approved as presented, however, as negotiations on certain aspects still need to be held, and final financial numbers will not be out until September, the budget presented may not be the final version of the budget for the 18-19 school year.

President Dean Hollenbeck explains final enrollment numbers will play a major role in any decisions.

If amendments need to be made the board will return to the issue in September.

Another action item on the agenda was the approval of a new associate degree in the FHTC Nursing Program. The program would be for a total of 67 credit hours and would require an admission and acceptance process due to the program being a 1 + 1 ADN program. Those selected into the second year of the ADN program will have successfully completed both a PN technical and will hold a current NCLEX-PN license.

Hollenbeck says the new program will provide educational opportunities for nursing students outside of the Emporia area.

The board unanimously voted to approve the new ADN program. The anticipated launch for the new degree program is fall 2019 with the program’s first graduates completing the course by spring 2020.

Board members also received an update on budget allocation and goals for the FHTC Library. An overview of monthly financial reports was also reviewed and President Dean Hollenbeck presented a college report.

The board will hold its final meeting of the academic year June 28.
