Law enforcement officials in Burlington are reporting a spike in car burglaries and warning residents to be on alert.

Burlington Police Chief Doug Jones says the crimes have occurred over the last week all over town. The one thing in common has been that people have left their car doors unlocked, creating more opportunities for thieves to rummage through belongings.

Jones says the burglaries appear to be occurring after dark, usually in the early morning hours. He's advising residents to keep their doors locked and keep an eye out for suspicious activity.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious should report it to Burlington Police or the Coffey County Sheriff's Office.
