Newman Regional Health’s Board of Trustees has solidified its appropriation request for Lyon County commissioners to consider Thursday.

During a special conference call Wednesday, board members approved a $400,000 request for a new voice-over internet protocol, or VoIP, system. The money would be spent on new equipment for the hospital.

The appropriation request is part of a so-called tri-party communications upgrade including the city of Emporia and Lyon County approved in December. As part of a memorandum of understanding, new servers were purchased by the city and county, who split the $180,000 price tag. The MOU says additional server-related costs will be split evenly by the city, county and hospital, but all hardware upgrades -- including phones, switches and wiring -- will be paid for by the agency needing the equipment.

Over the last several years, Newman Regional Health has made several significant appropriations requests of Lyon County for important projects. Prior county funding has paid for phone switches, security enhancements and MRI and CT scanners. County dollars have also helped to develop Newman Cardiology and the Women’s Imaging Center.
