All systems go for Emporia's fireworks show

Residents from across the KVOE listening area will flock to Emporia State University for the city's annual Fourth of July fireworks spectacular Wednesday night.

Fireworks should begin around 9:45 pm or so. The Flint Hills Optimists have now been responsible for setting up the show for at least a decade. On KVOE's Talk of Emporia recently, club president Matt Fowler said the show could last up to 30 minutes. Regardless of how long it lasts, he says it's rewarding to be involved.

The overall parking plan is the same as it has been the past few years, meaning all ESU tailgating areas north of Welch Stadium are available to the public starting around 7 pm. Welch Stadium, meanwhile, opens at 8 pm. Handicapped-accessible parking will be near Wilson Park east of Welch Stadium. Police Sgt. Lisa Sage, a recent Newsmaker guest, says you can tailgate, but you can't bring alcohol or fireworks. She also says folks driving on Interstate 35 and Kansas Highway 99 need to keep moving along during the show.

For years, the city, county, Lyon County Attorney's Office and -- occasionally -- the Clint Bowyer 79 Fund -- had provided money for the show. Now that all comes from in-town fireworks sales.

Local law enforcement -- Emporia Police, Lyon County deputies and ESU Police and Safety -- will be on hand as well as Emporia Fire crews to make sure everything goes smoothly and everybody is safe.
