Medicare recipients locally should be on the lookout for a new Medicare card in the mail.

The federal government began mailing the replacement cards earlier this year and many residents here locally are starting to receive them. Newman Regional Health Systems Analyst and Information Security Officer Beth Cole was on KVOE's Newsmaker program this week highlighting some of the special features of the new card.

The idea behind the new cards is to protect sensitive information like social security numbers and birthdates and keep it out of the hands of identity thieves. Cole says the replacement cards are long overdue.

The first round of cards went out in March and Cole says there hasn't been a lot of advertising about the new Medicare cards here locally.

Recipients should remember that Medicare will never call you uninvited and ask you to give out personal or private information to get your new Medicare number and card. Additional information can be found at medicare.gov.
