An emergency need for blood donations has been issued by the American Red Cross.

Communications Manager for Central Plains Region Jan Hale appeared on to KVOE's Newsmaker 2 segment this week about how critical the shortage is, even here in Kansas.

Hale says they can forecast about 12 weeks into the future their blood donation needs and shortages. Currently, they have held 550 fewer blood drives nationwide than at this time last year.

Hale talked about why this summer has been particularly difficult.

There are several upcoming blood drives in and around Emporia:

*Friday: Flinthills Mall, 12-6 pm
*July 27: Americus United Methodist Church, 12-6 pm
*Aug. 1: Emporia State University, 10:45 am-4:15 pm
*Aug. 2: Flinthills Mall, 1-6 pm
Aug. 15: Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church, 12-6 pm

Hale says every two seconds someone in the country is in need of blood and recent survey data shows nearly half of people surveyed know someone that has been in need of blood, but only 3 percent of the population has donated blood.
