The Emporia School Board was presented with a thorough safety update during its meeting Wednesday evening.

In addition to a number of safety enhancements being looked at for each district building, many staff members have also undergone intruder training. Emporia High School staff members participated in an intruder training event with local law enforcement June 11. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Kelly Bolin.

It was also announced during the board meeting that USD 253 is receiving a grant totalling $84,564 from the Kansas Legislature's Safe and Secure Schools Act which can be used to upgrade safety standards that meet a number of tentative standards as well as training procedures. Newly-elected Board President Mike Crouch says having those state funds will go a long way.

Emporia was one of 153 districts to receive a portion of the $5 million distribution. The district will match those funds with $85,000 from its capital outlay fund.

In other business, Crouch was elected board president for 2018-19 and Art Gutierrez was elected vice president. Melissa Ogleby was appointed to represent the school board on the Emporia Recreation Commission taking Mike Helbert's seat. Wednesday was Helbert's final meeting following his announced resignation last month.

The board also accepted a $259,000 bid from EVCO Wholesale for the district's milk and juice products contract for 2018-19. Assistant Superintendent of Business Rob Scheib also informed the board that the budget is expected to be ready for the USD 253 Budget Workshop either at an Aug. 1 special board meeting or during the Aug. 8 regular board meeting with expected approval by Aug. 22.
