Battle of the Badges set to begin KVOE File Photo

Police and fire first responders will battle it out next week to increase local blood donations.

The annual Battle of the Badges blood drive will begin Wednesday, August 15 and run through Friday, August 17. The annual event sees local fire and police first responders compete to bring in the larger number of blood donations.

American Red Cross donor recruitment account manager Susan Faler says the event comes at a great time as emergency blood supplies have been abnormally low this year.

Battle of the Badges has brought in on average just over 200 pints of blood each year. This year the event has increased to three days as opposed to two as in years past. With the added day, organizers anticipate the event may bring in over 260 pints this year.

Faler says the event is a great assistance to American Red Cross efforts, and the competitive aspect makes it fun for first responders.

Those wishing to donate should properly hydrate before donating and eat a healthy breakfast or lunch. All donators must bring a valid photo ID with them and be prepared to answer questions about their medical history. Once the donation process is complete there will be food provided by first responders. Faler says it is best to wait 10-15 minutes before leaving the church just to make sure you are not suffering any effects from donating.

The blood drive will be held at 12th Avenue Baptist Church. The full list of blood drive dates and times are as follows:

Wednesday, August 15: 12 pm to 6 pm

Thursday, August 16: 8 am to 2 pm

Friday, August 17: 10 am to 4 pm
