A discussion of a new opportunity to connect innovation to industry for entrepreneurs was a major focus of the Regional Development Association's monthly meeting held Friday morning.

The Kansas City-based Digital Sandbox has been in discussion with the RDA about a potential $750,000 i6 Economic Development Association grant to Emporia over the next three years. RDA President Kent Heermann says it creates an exciting avenue potentially for start-up businesses.

If approved for the grant, the RDA would contribute $100,000, split up in payments of $20,000 in 2019, and $40,000 each in 2020 and 2021. Heermann says Digital Sandbox has had success with their program in other cities.

Heermann says he's optimistic that Emporia will receive the grant and says they should learn by mid-October if the application was successful.
