Like it or not, flu season is upon us.

In fact, the official kickoff to flu season is Oct. 1 with the peak part of the season from December to March. Local health officials are already encouraging people to get vaccinated. Thankfully there have been no confirmed cases of Influenza in the Emporia area yet, but following a high volume amount of flu cases last year, the vaccines should be well in stock.

Newman Regional Health Director of Pharmacy Ashley Edwards says while last year's vaccine may not have been as successful in preventing the flu, getting vaccinated is still so important.

The hospital got its shipment of the flu shots two weeks ago and the Flint Hills Community Health Center received its first shipment on Wednesday. Community Health Nurse Cami McClellan details what the vaccine will protect against.

Flu shots are recommended for anyone six months or older and especially with asthma or chronic health diseases. Perhaps the biggest reason to get vaccinated though is to protect others vulnerable to flu symptoms. Edwards says it's crucial the public educate themselves with facts.

McClellan explains who should get vaccinated.

Flu shots are available at both location and are covered by most health insurance providers. Appointments are encouraged. The Health Center also will host its annual drive-thru flu shot clinic from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 28.
