Separate hydroplane crashes on Turnpike both cause minor injuries Kansas Turnpike logo

Minor injuries developed during a pair of wrecks on the Kansas Turnpike on Tuesday.


The Kansas Highway Patrol says a truck driven by 69-year-old Larry Parker of Tyrone, Okla., hydroplaned around 10:30 am at the Emporia tollgate. Parker lost control and the truck hit a barrier wall.

A passenger, 57-year-old Rhonda Danekas of Liberal, was listed as injured but declined treatment. Parker was not hurt. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Less than an hour later, a similar kind of accident happened about 40 miles to the northeast in Osage County. A car driven by 89-year-old Richard Schwarz of Derby hydroplaned, spun out and hit a wall.

Swartz was not hurt. A passenger, 78-year-old Shirley Schwarz of Derby, suffered minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital afterward. Both were wearing seatbelts when the crash happened.
