Emporia School Board members sat through a lengthy study session Wednesday with members of HTK Architects to give input on how they'd like to see the ongoing district needs assessment move forward.

The study session focused on five critical areas driving the needs assessment including district strengths, facility expectations, facility concerns or deficiencies, aspirations for the future and a discussion of goals. Board member Melissa Ogleby says the study session was good for a few reasons.

HTK Architects has been visiting with patrons and staff at each of the different school buildings this month gathering input. Many commonalities are being developed in a desire for safer and more secure buildings, improvements to parking and drop off at each school, issues with maintenance and space, storm shelters and accessibility issues. The next input meeting is scheduled Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Emporia High School.

The board also approved a motion allowing HTK Architects to begin preparing bid documents to allow the district to begin improvements to secure entrances at each of the buildings, separate from the needs assessment. Earlier this year, the district received a state grant totaling $84,500 earmarked just for that. Those dollars have to be utilized before the end of the year. Ogleby explains why the board pushed to move this along.

In other business Wednesday the board held an executive session and took action to deny a former employee's unspecified request dated from Sept. 27 by a 6-1 vote. Susan Brinkman was the lone board member to vote against the denial.
