The Regional Development Association of East Central Kansas will have its monthly board meeting Friday morning.

The main topics of discussion come from President Kent Heermann's report. Heermann will report on so-called Qualified Opportunity Zones. Part of southeast Emporia in and immediately around Industrial Park III was designated a federal Opportunity Zone this past spring. These zones at the state and federal level are designed to boost urban and rural communities grappling with population decline, crumbling infrastructure and other economic hardships by providing tax incentives for reinvesting certain capital gains into so-called Opportunity Funds.

Heermann will also report on state and federal brownfield assessments and grant programs. Brownfields are properties that could be expanded, redeveloped or reused -- but development is complicated by the actual or possible presence of hazardous materials.

Heermann will also continue the discussion about Applied Marketing's effectiveness in generating contacts and leads for additional local development.

The meeting starts at 7 am in the Trusler Business Center.
