One death, heavy damage follows fire at Wabaunsee County winery Google Maps image

One person is dead and a winery suffered heavy damage after a fire in northern Wabaunsee County on Thursday.

Fire developed at the Wyldewood Cellars Winery just outside Paxico. KVOE's television partner, WIBW-TV in Topeka, says Sheriff Rob Hoskins confirmed at least one death at the site.

A news release from the Sheriff's Office says the fire was reported shortly before 6:30 pm. Besides deputies, Highway Patrol troopers and firefighters from Paxico/McFarland, Maple Hill, Alma and Wamego responded. The Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office has been notified and will help with the investigation. Medical personnel from AMR have been at the site as well.
