Tax credits are coming to Westar Energy customers over the next month.

Westar says it has applied special credits to customers eligible for the program as part of a merger with Great Plains Energy from earlier this year and the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act from late last year. Spokesperson Gina Penzig calls this a fulfillment of two commitments by Westar for its customers.

Speaking of the merger, Penzig says it legally closed in June. The new company name, Evergy, will start being more visible at some point next year.

9 am Wednesday: Tax credits finalized for Westar Energy customers

Westar Energy customers may see a decrease in their bills either this month or next month.

Westar says it has applied special credits to customers eligible for the program as part of a merger with Great Plains Energy from earlier this year and the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act from late last year.

Residents will see about a $50 credit, with about $15 linked to the merger and the rest coming from tax savings. Commercial and industrial customers will see credits vary based on their electricity use between November 2017 and October 2018.

This is a one-time credit. It's also the first of five annual credits to come for Westar customers.
