Emporia Fire investigators are working to determine exactly what caused a fire that destroyed about 20 tires and came close to damaging a west Emporia business Thursday.

Firefighters were dispatched to Waechter Trucking, 1761 Road G, shortly after 2 pm. Thick black smoke belched from the tires, which were reportedly five feet from the main building at the property.

EFD called in Americus Fire for mutual aid. With the petroleum-based nature of the fire, crews used a special foam to put out the fire while minimizing the air pollution at the site.

Nobody was hurt, and there was apparently no fire-related damage to the building. Fire Battalion Chief Ryan Conley says crews pulled some siding to make sure the fire did not extend into the structure.

Thursday’s fire happened shortly after crews began working to replace a four-way stoplight at US Highway 50 and Road G that was destroyed about two weeks ago as part of a two-vehicle crash. The combination of the two events closed Road G traffic for nearly four hours, while US-50 traffic was constricted to one lane in each direction for over two hours.
