USPS offers important dates and tips for shipping packages this Christmas season KVOE File Photo

Christmas Day is almost upon us and the deadlines for shipping those special presents to friends and family is coming event sooner.

Emporia Postmaster Harry Gifford had several tips and dates important for sending packages during KVOE's Newsmaker 2 segment Thursday.

As expected per the holiday season, Gifford says that the Post Office locally is seeing an increase in shipments.

Gifford let us know when the deadlines are for shipping both domestically and internationally if you want your packages to be delivered by Christmas.

The domestic deadlines for shipping in the United States are Dec. 20-22 depending on whether first-class or express shipping is used.

When shipping, Gifford recommends wrapping fragile items in paper, shipping photos outside of frames to avoid breaking, taping the package correctly, and using the USPS website to confirm both sending and receiving addresses.

The Post Office in Emporia is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 am-4:30 pm, Saturday from 9:30 am-11:30 am and, for the next two Sundays, from 11:00 am-3:00 pm. For more information on all things shipping, call the USPS at (800) 275-8777, visit their website at USPS.com, or visit the Post Office on Merchant Street.
