A Herington man was hospitalized after an injury crash in northen Lyon County early Friday, but he was fortunate the situation didn't turn out worse.


Lyon County deputies and rescue crews were called out to the 1300 block of Road 340, or near the intersection between that county road and US Highway 56, shortly before 6 am. Deputy Doug Stump says 39-year-old Braulio Rivas fell asleep at the wheel.

Stump says Rivas was airborne for close to 100 feet and traveled close to 500 feet before hitting the tree. He was taken to Newman Regional Health with what are being called non-life-threatening injuries. He was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Rivas had been on the road for 10-12 hours before the crash, according to Stump, and had taken a couple breaks while on his way back home but apparently didn't get enough rest. Stump says crashes like this point up the need for resting at times during longer trips.

7:15 am Friday: One person transported for treatment after injury crash near Northern Heights High School

One person has been taken to Newman Regional Health after a crash in north Lyon County early Friday morning.

Lyon County Deputy Doug Stump says one vehicle crashed in the 1300 block of Road 340 just before 6 am. The driver suffered apparently non-life-threatening injuries but was transported for treatment afterward.

Further crash details are currently pending.

6 am Friday: Injury crash reported in northern Lyon County

An injury crash has been reported in north Lyon County on Friday morning.


Lyon County deputies and rescue crews from Emporia and Allen-Admire were dispatched to the 1300 block of Road 340 shortly before 6 am. There is currently no word on the number of vehicles involved or the potential number of patients at the scene.

The wreck site is listed on a county road between Northern Heights High School and Admire. It's just west of where a county road joins US Highway 56.
