Programs are now up and running as the transition from the Lyon County Department on aging and the North Central Flinthills Area Agency on Aging is largely complete.

The Area Agency officially assumed responsibility of senior services for Lyon County on Jan. 1. The changeover came after an agreement was reached between the county and Area Agency in October.

These services include health insurance counseling and commodity box distribution through the Kansas Food Bank. Lyon County Commission Chairman Rollie Martin explains there were several factors which led to the desire for the changeover.

With the change of operations also came a change of venue as most aging services switched over from the former Aging Services Department located at 402 Commercial to the Friendship Center at 221 W. Logan Ave. One service which did not change hands is Lyon County Area Transportation, more commonly known as LCAT.

Also, there was no change to the Friendship Meals Program also known as Meals on Wheels.

According to Interim Aging Services Director Michael Halleran, a big benefit from the changeover will be individual case management services for senior citizens. One example of this will be Senior Health Insurance Counselors of Kansas or SHICK.

Halleran says their job will be to help senior citizens navigate the sometimes confusing topic of health insurance.

Area Agency Director Julie Govert-Walter will have more information on the changeover when she joins KVOE's Newsmaker segment on Wednesday at 7:15 am.
