President of the League of Women Voters of Emporia Teressa Briggs recently joined KVOE's Talk of Emporia to inform listeners on the work done by the organization.

The League of Women Voters is an activist, grassroots organization which began in 1920 whose leaders believe voters should play a vital role in democracy. The group formed roughly six months before the 19th amendment was ratified giving women the right to vote.

According to Briggs, the League's mission is to provide education for new voters and to ensure all voters rights are protected.

Despite their name, Briggs says the league is comprised of both male and female members after men were allowed to join in the early 70's. Also, individuals wishing to join do not have to be of voting age as membership is open to anyone 16 years of age or older.

Recently the Emporia league received a $500 grant from the national chapter which will aid with youth voter registration. Briggs explains:

Briggs says part of their mission includes keeping an eye on legislation dealing with voter rights at both the state and national levels.

Briggs adds the league is also non-partisan meaning they do not affiliate with any one party or individual.

Locally the league offers many opportunities for voters to become engaged or educated on political subjects. This includes co-organizing annual legislative dialogues along with the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce Government Matters Committee such as the recent dialogue held Saturday at the Sauder Alumni Center.

Next year will mark the 100 year anniversary of the league's inception. For more information on the league and their work or if you are interested in becoming a member contact Teressa Briggs by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
