With winter now fading and springtime coming into view, severe weather begins to be a major focus for the area.

Monday evening the annual Lyon County storm spotter training session took place at the Bowyer Community Building. NWS Coordination Meteorologist Chad Omitt delivered the informational presentation which dealt with multiple areas of the storm reporting process.

One of these areas focused on discussing situational awareness, which Omitt explains is understanding every aspect of a severe weather event.

Along with 64 local community members, Lyon County Emergency Manager Jarrod Fell was also in attendance for the presentation. He says the session is not only great for community members, but also for local officials such as himself to ensure he is as up to date as possible on information and statistics related to severe weather.

Omitt says these training sessions are extremely important as spotters are a critical piece to the storm reporting process.

For area residents who were unable to attend the Lyon County training session there are still several more opportunities in the coming weeks. Upcoming dates are:

*March 14: Osage County -- 7-9 pm, Schuyler Community Center, Burlingame
*March 27: Coffey County -- 7-9 pm, Coffey County Fairgrounds 4H Building, Burlington
*April 2: Chase County -- 6:30-8:30 pm, Chase County Community Building, Cottonwood Falls
*April 2: Wabaunsee County -- 7-9 pm, Mission Valley High School
