The Emporia School Board is in the process of refining recommendations on the recent district facility needs assessment.

Representatives of HTK Architects returned to Mary Herbert Education Center Wednesday night to present their most recent presentation before the board. During the board's last meeting, members had the opportunity to provide feedback to HTK's original findings.

According to HTK representative Zack Snethen, they are currently in the process of utilizing that feedback to help refine their preliminary recommendations. Snethen says the most recent step in this process came Monday as HTK and district representatives conducted a second walkthrough of all district elementary schools.

Board President Mike Crouch says overall he feels they are in great shape, however, there is still a lot of work ahead. He believes it is important to not rush any decisions as any renovations that are made are intended to last over the next 25 years.

According to Snethen, they are currently mid refinement and the next step in the process will be a second walkthrough of Emporia High School and Emporia Middle School.

In other business, the board discussed possible roof improvements for multiple district buildings. In May 2018, an assessment was conducted at Flint Hills Technical College due to hail damage.

During that time a thorough inspection of all district buildings was recommended and conducted. The inspection showed damage to multiple buildings including FHTC, Emporia High School, Village Elementary School and Mary Herbert Education Center.

According to Crouch, the district is planning to move forward on this project as they are able to fix the roofs for the cost of their insurance deductible which is roughly $10,000. There is currently no timeline for this project.

Also during the meeting, board members approved the purchase of two new buses for a total of $181,290 and received an updated on current bonds from Piper Jaffray.

The next Emporia School Board meeting will be held Wednesday, March 27 at 7 pm inside Mary Herbert Education Center.
