Kansas Gas urges calls to 811 as National Safe Digging Month continues KVOE News file photo

April is National and Kansas Safe Digging Month, and Kansas Gas Service is among the utilities working hard to get the message out about being safe when you plan your below-ground projects.

Manager of Public Relations Dawn Tripp says an underground utility line -- natural gas or otherwise -- is hit every six minutes, and a third of those incidents are directly related to somebody not calling ahead of time to find out where underground utilities are located. The phone number 811 has been promoted for years, and Tripp says it provides valuable information about underground utilities.

811 operators are available on a 24-7 basis.

Residents can also go online to www.kansasonecall.com for similar information, but again residents need to call ahead before they dig. For more information, go online to www.call811.com.

If you smell gas or accidentally hit a line, leave the area immediately and call 911. Also, Tripp says you should call the Gas Emergency Line at 888-482-4950. More information is online at www.kansasgasservice.com
