The Kansas Department of Transportation has approved a major construction project in Flint Hills Nature Trail State Park north of Emporia.

Spokesperson Kim Stich tells KVOE News the overall work zone is 19 miles long and includes rebuilding or rehabilitating the railroad bed that is a key part of the trail. Other projects will include adding new rock, fixing slopes and overhauling bridges in Lyon and Osage counties.

Killough Construction of Ottawa won the contract with a $3.8 million bid. A project timetable has not been announced.
