A Wichita man is dead and a Chase County man was badly hurt after a head-on crash near Strong City early Saturday.

Sheriff Richard Dorneker says the wreck happened around 3:15 am and involved eastbound and westbound vehicles on US Highway 50. The eastbound vehicle, driven by Nathan Long of Elmdale, went left of center for currently unlisted reasons and slammed into the westbound vehicle, driven by 22-year-old Austin Rhoads of Wichita.

Rhoads was pronounced dead at the scene. Long was airlifted to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka for treatment and is in critical condition at last word.

Highway 50 was completely closed for about 90 minutes after the crash.
