SOS Strong launches this evening.

The formal kickoff for the fifth annual event is at 5:30 pm at Radius Brewing Company. On KVOE's Talk of Emporia this week, Kari Wedel of SOS said the fundraiser has a great message.

Lucas Moody of SOS expanded on that mission during the program.

SOS Strongman Nick Cherry of Madison says he was honored to be chosen. He says his time as a foster parent opened his eyes to the plight of youngsters coming from abusive or neglectful situations -- and indirectly prepared him to be part of SOS Strong when asked.

As has been the case the past few years, 20 men -- 10 from Lyon County and two each from Chase, Coffey, Greenwood, Morris and Osage counties -- will try to raise $1,000 each between now and the awards celebration Aug. 8. Money goes back into SOS to fund its range of programs and services.

For more information, call SOS at 343-8799 or go online to www.soskansas.com. Two online donation avenues go online Thursday evening -- a website, www.sosstrong.givesmart.com, and texting sosstrong to 52182.
