Lyon County Commissioners have taken a funding request for a major development campaign under consideration following their weekly action session Thursday morning.

Jeff Williams with Ignite Emporia, along with representatives from the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, USD 253 and local business, attended the meeting and made a $100,000 funding request from commissioners for the Ignite Emporia Economic Development Campaign. The campaign is a five-year initiative which seeks to grow Emporia, create jobs and expand current business and industries among other goals.

Williams sums up the campaign by saying "it's all about our kids today and also those folks who may want to come to Emporia."

Williams adds the campaign will also extend beyond just the city of Emporia and Lyon County.

Commissioner Scott Briggs says what impresses him most about Ignite Emporia is how they utilize input from local business.

The commission has taken the request under consideration and will make their decision known once the budget is finalized come August.

In other business commissioners also approved two requests from Community Corrections Director Steve Willis. The first request was for approval of the fiscal year 2019 budget adjustments of $6,646.23 for the juvenile budget and $13,704.03 for the adult budget. Both adjustments were approved. Secondly, commissioners also approved the FY 19 finalized workbooks.

A public hearing was later held on the vacation of a section of Road U south of Highway 170. The vacation was approved unanimously.

Commissioners also approved to send Lyon County Zoning and Flood Plain Manager Sam Seeley to the 2019 Quad State American Planning Association Conference in October. Lyon County Appraiser Ryan Janzen and Doug Gilmore also received approval to attend the International Association of Assessing Officers conference in Niagra Falls, Canada in September.

The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for their weekly action session next Thursday at 8 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
